Humans Dont Just Have Five Senses

  • Sep 23, 2010 from awesometastic1(Vacca Foeda Media) in Offbeat
awesometastic1 It turns out, there are at least nine senses and most researchers think there are more like twenty-one or so. The traditional five senses model (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) is credited to Aristotle.
Just for reference, the commonly held definition of a sense is any system that consists of a group of sensory cell types that respond to a specific physical phenomenon and that corresponds to a particular group of regions within the brain where the signals are received and interpreted.
The commonly held human senses are as follows:

Sight: This technically is two senses given the two distinct types of receptors present, one for color (cones) and one for brightness (rods).
Taste: This is sometimes argued to be five senses by itself due to the differing types of taste receptors (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami), but generally is just referred to as one sense. For those who dont know, umami receptors detect the amino acid glutamate, which is a taste generally found in meat and some artificial flavoring. The taste sense, unlike sight, is a sense based off of a chemical reaction
Touch: This has been found to be distinct from pressure, temperature, pain, and even itch sensors.
    Pressure: Obvious sense is obvious.
Itch: Surprisingly, this is a distinct sensor system from other touch-related senses.
Thermoception: Ability to sense heat and cold. This also is thought of as more than one sense. This is not just because of the two hot/cold receptors, but also because there is a completely different type of thermoceptor, in terms of the mechanism for detection, in the brain. These thermoceptors in the brain are used for monitoring internal body temperature.
Sound: Detecting vibrations along some medium, such as air or water that is in contact with your ear drums.
Smell: Yet another of the sensors that work off of a chemical reaction. This sense combines with taste to produce flavors.
Proprioception: This sense gives you the ability to tell where your body parts are, relative to other body parts. This sense is one of the things police officers test when they pull over someone who they think is driving drunk. The close your eyes and touch your nose test is testing this sense. This sense is used all the time in little ways, such as when you scratch an itch on your foot, but never once look at your foot to see where your hand is relative to your foot.
Tension Sensors: These are found in such places as your muscles and allow the brain the ability to monitor muscle tension.
Nociception: In a word, pain. This was once thought to simply be the result of overloading other senses, such as touch, but this has been found not to be the case and instead, it is its own unique sensory system. There are three distinct types of pain receptors: cutaneous (skin), somatic (bones and joints), and visceral (body organs).
Equilibrioception: The sense that allows you to keep your balance and sense body movement in terms of acceleration and directional changes. This sense also allows for perceiving gravity. The sensory system for this is found in your inner ears and is called the vestibular labyrinthine system. Anyone whos ever had this sense go out on them on occasion knows how important this is. When its not working or malfunctioning, you literally cant tell up from down and moving from one location to another without aid is nearly impossible.
Stretch Receptors: These are found in such places as the lungs, bladder, stomach, and the gastrointestinal tract. A type of stretch receptor, that senses dilation of blood vessels, is also often involved in headaches.
Chemoreceptors: These trigger an area of the medulla in the brain that is involved in detecting blood born hormones and drugs. It also is involved in the vomiting reflex.
Thirst: This system more or less allows your body to monitor its hydration level and so your body knows when it should tell you to drink.
Hunger: This system allows your body to detect when you need to eat something.
Magentoception: This is the ability to detect magnetic fields, which is principally useful in providing a sense of direction when detecting the Earths magnetic field. Unlike most birds, humans do not have a strong magentoception, however, experiments have demonstrated that we do tend to have some sense of magnetic fields. The mechanism for this is not completely understood; it is theorized that this has something to do with deposits of ferric iron in our noses. This would make sense if that is correct as humans who are given magnetic implants have been shown to have a much stronger magnetoception than humans without.
Time: This one is debated as no singular mechanism has been found that allows people to perceive time. However, experimental data has conclusively shown humans have a startling accurate sense of time, particularly when younger. The mechanism we use for this seems to be a distributed system involving the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and basal...

    About Laptop Repair

  • Sep 24, 2010 from bestofthenets(Marilyn Lee) in Lifestyle
bestofthenets At one time, laptops were frequently heavy, expensive, and underpowered. However, with the improvement in technology the modern laptop a very portable and can perform as well as most powerful desktop computers. But with the extra features and the portability, problems can happen that can cause a broken laptop.
The power source is the most common hardware problems that are found on a laptop. This is when the laptop wont turn on following numerous attempts. The battery may, at first, seem to need to be recharged, but plugging the laptop into an electrical outlet doesnt help. The problem may very well be a bad power jack or adapter. The reason the power jack on a laptop is easy to damage is the result of the frequency is uses. With owners unplugging and plugging in the Ac adapter carelessly, the jack can become damaged as the solder joint wear down which prevents the laptop from receiving external power. After the battery has runs out, the laptop cant be recharged and wont function.
Overheating is another laptop repair problem that owners may face. This is the result of airflow being blocked to the laptop or by a faulty fan. Laptops are cooled by a small fan that turns off and on that brings cool air in from the outside to cool the laptop off inside. If this fan stops bringing in the cool air, there are components in the laptop such as the hard drive and the CPU can overheat which will cause the laptop to intermittently shutdown. In addition, a laptop may overheat if airflow into it is blocked. This is commonly caused by the laptop resting on a soft surface like a pillow when being used. To prevent this, a laptop always needs to be resting on a hard, flat surface when it is turned on.
Laptops are portable, but they usually can suffer a lot of abuse. Falls or bumps are the primary reason for laptop failures. Impacts are responsible causing malfunctions of the hard drive. Sudden impacts disturb the delicate reading head or magnetic platters in a hard drive which will make it unreadable. If this should happen, the computer may fail to boot to the operating system. If a warning message appears on the screen that tells the owner that the hard drive has failed, the drive needs to be replaced.
There are also some laptop problems that are caused by software. Sometimes laptop owners will complain about their laptops acting strange or being slow. These problems are probably caused by a software problem as opposed to a hardware fault. The usual causes of software problems are viruses, incompatible software or bad drivers. The operating system and the drivers should be kept and disk defragmentation and virus scans performed.

    Rowing Machines The Different Types

  • Sep 19, 2010 from bestofthenets(Marilyn Lee) in *
bestofthenets Working out on a rowing machine is a wonderful form of cardiovascular exercise, and there are four major types of rowing machine available for sale. They all have different resistance types; the first is with a piston, the second with magnets, the third with air, and the final with water. Depending on ones personal preference, theres a type for everyone. Usually the decision to choose one machine over another is due to combination of functionality and personal taste.
Piston resistance machines are the first type of rowing machine. They are called piston resistance machines because they have hydraulic cylinders mounted on the arms. They are typically very thin machines due to their construction, and they can be stowed away under furniture very easily. Theyre also the least expensive of the group, so you wont put a huge dent in your paycheck to buy one. While not the most realistic, they still provide a good workout. If youre looking for something more realistic, the other types may be a good choice.
The second type of machine that we will discuss is the magnetic resistance style of machine. This machine is very much like the piston resistance machine but instead of pistons there are electromagnets controlling the resistance. The best thing about this machine is that the electromagnetic resistance can be controlled, and it is a very quiet machine. Unlike a piston model the resistance can be changed. One negative is that theyre harder to store than other machines. Because the magnetic resistance machine has a long rail, its impossible to fold and store away. This is an awesome machine for someone with plenty of room, and for someone who wants a workout thats adjustable.
Air Resistance machines are the type that are most commonly used by rowers when theyre not on the water. The resistance on this machine, like on the water, comes from your own pace. When you increase the speed or pace of your rowing, then the machine increases its resistance. There are usually secondary resistance levers that add or remove resistance as well. Because these machines typically have a fan, they can start to blow quite noisily. This can be seen as a disadvantage. And like the magnetic resistance machines, it has a longer main rail that means its harder to store. While the machine is excellent for taller users due to its long main rail, its not that portable. In short its a good machine that provides a more similar experience to rowing on the water.
The fourth and final type of machine we will discuss is the water resistance style of machine. This machine gives the user an experience thats very similar to rowing on the water. When you increase your pace your resistance gets harder, as it works on the water. And by adding water to the resistance tank, you can toggle the resistance and have more control over the workout. But these machines also have disadvantages. The water resistance machine has a long rail, and is hard to store. And because they hold water, they can be very heavy and hard to move. While they may not be as noisy as an air resistance model, this is good machine if you plan on keeping it in one place.

joeypk12 Ions. You’ve heard of them for some time and you’ve wondered what exactly they do. Besides cleaning your air, minus ions are abundant in nature (hence that ‘high’ you get when outdoors) whereas day-to-day stress and electronics deplete those ions creating fatigue, lack of concentration, muscle and joint aches.
