Rudie Reviews Terrence Malicks The Thin Red Line [Criterion Collection DVD Review]

  • Sep 28, 2010 from criterioncast(Criterion Cast)
criterioncast In 1998, Terrence Malick made a remarkable film called The Thin Red Line. A film that examines the nature of man in relation to the world that surrounds him. The Thin Red Line is a war film taking place during the Battle of Guadacanal in World War II, it follows C Company during the eventual victory of the Allied Troops. Its interesting because the outcome of the battle isnt very important to the film. Malick doesnt concern himself with politics and whether or not the war was justified, hes more interested in the nature of man in context of war. How do we fit in with the world?
Opening the film is a strange and tranquil 15 minute introduction with Private Witt (James Caviezel), he has gone AWOL and is living with Melanesian native in the South Pacific. These early scenes are extremely peaceful, with a group of people that have no concept of violence against each other. They live as a community and seem to have taken Private Witt as one of their own. He is later found and taken back by the Army by First Sergeant Welsh (Sean Penn). This is strange because Private Witt is not the main character, he is one of the characters we follow through the film. Malick takes this convention of introducing the film by throwing out the relevance and trope of the conventional protagonist. Interestingly enough, the film follows the arcs of many.

The casting of The Thin Red Line is also peculiar because of the celebrity that goes along with it. From John Travolta to Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson, John Cusack, John C. Reilly, Nick Stahl, Jared Leto, Sean Penn, Adrian Brody and George Clooney (among others) are cast in this film. Was it to bank of their collective celebrity at the box office? Were big named stars looking to work with a great filmmaker like Terrence Malick? Or is Malick trying to say something through the casting? I would say its a comment on the randomness of violence. The idea of how nature is cruel is brought up again and again in this film. As a member of the audience, we are conditioned to think that if a big named celebrity (like the ones in this film) are in a movie then theres no possible way theyll be killed, especially early on. Malick (and war) are not afraid to kill a star during a battle sequence. This take on casting was used in 2008s The Hurt Locker when Kathrine Bigelow cast Guy Pearce only to be killed in the first 10 minutes of that movie. What these filmmakers are trying to say is that war is an unforgiving act, no one is safe from its harm, even in Hollywood movies.
Rest to sure, that The Thin Red Line is a Hollywood film but its one of the strange instances where typical Hollywood fare transcends into high art (Yes, sometimes its possible). The film was nominated in 1999 for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score, Best Sound and Best Film Editing but not winning any of these awards. It lost out to other Oscar Nominated films in 1999 like John Maddens Shakespeare In Love (Best Picture) and Steven Spielbergs Saving Private Ryan (Another film about World War II for Best Director). Not to say this film didnt get any critical recognition in 1999, it made many film critics and publications top ten list for 1999 including winning the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

The release from Criterion is absolutely exquisite with a new digital transfer approved by Terrence Malick and cinematographer John Toll, the images are breathtaking, sweeping and so rich in color and texture. A new commentary recorded in 2010 features John Toll, production designer Jack Fisk and producer Grant Hill. The bonus features on the second disc will be a treat for any Terrence Malick fan which include interviews from the casting sessions, editors and producers on The Thin Red Line. Interestingly, you get a kick out of the casting sessions, casting director and audition tapes. Dianne Crittenden, the casting director, and Terrence Malick auditioned practically every male actor from ages 18 to 56 in Hollywood for the astounding 165 speaking roles from the script of The Thin Red Line. I found these audition tapes to be most fascinating, thinking about the hundreds of different ways this film could have been cast.
The way The Thin Red Line was put together was absolutely staggering. Three different editors were brought on to put together different sections of this humongous film. And really, it does make sense, this film at times is a thrilling war epic with the battle scenes to back it up and also a reflective, introspective meditation on the existence of man and his relation to nature and violence. At times it does feel like two different films but tonally it feels like a modern masterpiece.
    Grade: A+
The Thin Red Line is now available on Blu-ray and DVD from The Criterion Collection.

Survivor Review: Loose Lips Sink Ships

Survivor Review: Loose Lips Sink Ships is a post from: Celebrity News | Celebrity Gossip | BuzzHollywood.com
Theres a famous saying from World War II that goes loose lips sink ships. During the 1940s the phrase was meant to reinforce the idea that discussing the wrong thing with the wrong person could cost American soldiers lives fighting over seas. While the point of the phrase is not that dramatic as it pertains to Survivor, the analogy could have been a very useful lesson for some of the castaways on last nights episode. Jimmy T represented the most obvious example of how his loose lips sank his own ship. Id ask the question what was he thinking? but I really dont think he recognized how detrimental his yapping was to his future in the game. Despite his admission on the show that perhaps his talking was going to put his head on the chopping block, I dont think he was all that serious about the comment. For all we know, he was responding to a producers question about if he thought his talking was upsetting the tribe and that was the first time the concept occurred to him. Not surprisingly, despite the fact that he was a far more useful player for the tribe, Jimmy T was sent packing when it should have been Dan. We often castigate Survivor players for not thinking or voting with their head (and Im one of the first people to do so), but a Survivor reality is that there is a threshold point of annoyance where someones usefulness in the game is not worth keeping around. (Did anyone else notice how cocky Marty was a tribal council? He was saying things to and about Jimmy T that we had never heard and camp and clearly would start a war if Jimmy T was not voted out. Marty knew Jimmy T was going home and felt empowered to talk about him that way. I think Dan knew as much as well and was confident to be honest about his performance, even if normally it might have put his future in jeopardy.) If Jimmy T had survived tribal council, I think he would have reformed his ways at camp and might have lasted longer than it seemed mere hours before. He definitely took his medicine at tribal council, but the decision had already been made and he was heading home. NaOnka has a similar affliction that Jimmy T does, a bad case of verbal diarrhea, but I dont think theres any medicine in the world that could cure her ailment. Would NaOnka respect the feelings of the majority of the tribe if they told her at tribal that her mouth was giving everyone headaches? As she so boldly told us last week, her name is NaOnka, not fool. Sounds like someone whos open to constructive criticism for me. The arrogance that some people display when they are part of a dominant alliance is always shocking to me. It is as if they have never seen the show before. This isnt the first two seasons anymore, theyre going to produce some sort of wrinkle that will rankle and mix up any dominant alliance. Having as positive of a relationship as possible with every tribemate is vital. Theres no way of knowing if NaOnka is going to have her tribe flipped on its head and shell be left with Alina and Kelly B working alongside Espada members. Beyond NaOnkas misplaced arrogance is her bloodlust for Kelly B. Normally I would attribute this kind of behavior to a lack of self-esteem, much like with Jimmy T. However, NaOnka does not fit that profile and instead seems like someone who has been a bully her entire life or is making up for years of being bullied by repaying the favor to someone now thats older. I touched on this idea last week, but her isolation of Kelly B seems far more to do with a form of bigotry than it does with being worried about a charity case (NaOnkas words, not mine) on the jury. For whatever reason, NaOnka does not like the fact that Kelly B and her prosthetic limb are different from NaOnka and all of her able-bodied tribemates. Her overt hatred of Kelly B will be NaOnkas undoing long before Kelly B is voted off. Although the people in her alliance agree that Kelly B cannot make it to the finals, I dont see them putting up with NaOnkas bigotry for very long. While their fear of Kelly Bs ability to win the game is misplaced for the moment, it likely is accurate towards the end of the game. As NaOnkas tormenting becomes more awkward to watch, her alliance will be forced to remove her. NaOnkas attitude is one of hatred and anger goes beyond the game and crosses many normal, social barriers. Im sure Kelly B is very used to her prosthetic limb and is not looking for any sympathy, but it is impossible not to realize that she has faced far more challenges than we have. She does deserve sympathy and admiration for overcoming her disability and only a cruel person like NaOnka would see it another way. More thoughts from this weeks episode: While Jimmy Ts singing was horrendous, at least he was singing Tom Petty. For my money, anyway. Whats with...
