But swimmers also need to know how fast they're going, so the watch should be able to tell them their pace without choking on all the chlorine. Scuba divers: When the weekend hits, these guys grab their masks, fins and regulators and head for the open water. So they require a watch that's water-resistant up to dozens of feet below the surface. Scuba divers depend on their Armani watches to monitor how much air they have left in their oxygen t

    Rowing Machines The Different Types

  • Sep 19, 2010 from bestofthenets(Marilyn Lee) in *
bestofthenets Working out on a rowing machine is a wonderful form of cardiovascular exercise, and there are four major types of rowing machine available for sale. They all have different resistance types; the first is with a piston, the second with magnets, the third with air, and the final with water. Depending on ones personal preference, theres a type for everyone. Usually the decision to choose one machine over another is due to combination of functionality and personal taste.
Piston resistance machines are the first type of rowing machine. They are called piston resistance machines because they have hydraulic cylinders mounted on the arms. They are typically very thin machines due to their construction, and they can be stowed away under furniture very easily. Theyre also the least expensive of the group, so you wont put a huge dent in your paycheck to buy one. While not the most realistic, they still provide a good workout. If youre looking for something more realistic, the other types may be a good choice.
The second type of machine that we will discuss is the magnetic resistance style of machine. This machine is very much like the piston resistance machine but instead of pistons there are electromagnets controlling the resistance. The best thing about this machine is that the electromagnetic resistance can be controlled, and it is a very quiet machine. Unlike a piston model the resistance can be changed. One negative is that theyre harder to store than other machines. Because the magnetic resistance machine has a long rail, its impossible to fold and store away. This is an awesome machine for someone with plenty of room, and for someone who wants a workout thats adjustable.
Air Resistance machines are the type that are most commonly used by rowers when theyre not on the water. The resistance on this machine, like on the water, comes from your own pace. When you increase the speed or pace of your rowing, then the machine increases its resistance. There are usually secondary resistance levers that add or remove resistance as well. Because these machines typically have a fan, they can start to blow quite noisily. This can be seen as a disadvantage. And like the magnetic resistance machines, it has a longer main rail that means its harder to store. While the machine is excellent for taller users due to its long main rail, its not that portable. In short its a good machine that provides a more similar experience to rowing on the water.
The fourth and final type of machine we will discuss is the water resistance style of machine. This machine gives the user an experience thats very similar to rowing on the water. When you increase your pace your resistance gets harder, as it works on the water. And by adding water to the resistance tank, you can toggle the resistance and have more control over the workout. But these machines also have disadvantages. The water resistance machine has a long rail, and is hard to store. And because they hold water, they can be very heavy and hard to move. While they may not be as noisy as an air resistance model, this is good machine if you plan on keeping it in one place.

    Australia's dark heart

  • Oct 02, 2010 from guardianukfeed in World News
guardianukfeed When an Aboriginal man was killed by five white youths in Alice Springs last year, it was the latest race-hate crime in an area plagued by violence. But the lenient sentences handed down to the "Ute 5" have sparked alarm that there will be a racial backlash in the Australian outbackOne after the other, the photographs of the dead man fall. There is Kwementyaye walking Waffles the dog on the beach; there he is on the platform of Alice Springs station; there he is blowing his birthday candles out, "surrounded by girls," says his fiance, Jade. "And smiling. He was always smiling." And then I see it the saddest picture of all. It's Jade with Kwementyaye just a few weeks before his death. It's shocking to see how different she looked before he died; before she knew the full story of the beating, the racist taunts and the firing of the gun; before all the rage and injustice that was to follow the phone call on that cold Saturday morning last July. The problem with sadness is that it is invisible. I couldn't see it, two hours ago, when I walked into the house that Jade Keil and Kwementyaye Ryder thought they'd spend the rest of their lives in. I couldn't see it as she pottered about making coffee, fussed over her uneaten carrot cake and talked me through the events of his death and the subsequent trial. Of course, misery is detectable only in its works, and I manage to grasp something of the sorrow and bedlam that Jade has been through when I glimpse the old photograph of her. She's slim, 30kg lighter, and her face shows none of the strange damage that bereavement has inflicted the lines beneath her eyes like bruises, the blemishes and whorls like cuts. The phone call came on 26 July last year. It was Kwementyaye's elder brother Darryl. He was sobbing. "Where are you? You don't know, do you? Get round here now. It's my bros. They've found him at the bottom of Anzac Hill. He's dead."The first feeling was no feeling at all. Jade simply put the phone down. She'd met Kwementyaye two and a half years earlier, in Bojangles bar in Alice Springs. She was a relative newcomer to Alice. She was 28 and had travelled all over Australia, but she liked it here and she definitely liked the look of the handsome Alice-born native in the flashy cowboy hat. Protected from shyness by an armour of beer, she walked up and pinched his bum. They got together immediately. They made plans. They would work, save and marry. They would travel to southeast Asia. How can all of that disappear in the space of a phone call? For Jade, it was simply too much to grasp. The last time Therese Ryder saw her son Kwementyaye, he was dancing to country music. He'd just returned from Trephina Gorge, where he worked as a trainee ranger and was singing and clapping to his favourite tunes before a beery night out. The next morning, an old school friend of Kwementyaye's knocked on the door. Therese laughed when she saw him he was dressed as a policeman."Why are you dressed like that?" she said."I'm a police officer now, Mrs Ryder."When he told her why he'd come, she screamed. It was the sight of Therese and her family, sitting on the floor wailing and crying, that finally triggered Jade's tears. But there was mystery, too. How did Kwementyaye come to have abrasions and swelling on his face, arms, forehead and leg and a 3cm laceration on the back of his head? He wasn't the violent kind. He'd never been in trouble with the police. Perhaps, they thought, he'd been in a car crash. Soon, the police came with darker news: they believed Kwementyaye had been murdered. In the streets and pubs and dusty camps of Alice Springs there were whispers and dread and fury; some heard rumours of white men fleeing the scene; others warned of riot and revenge. Bloody memories began to rouse themselves from the floor of the town's collective conscious. Worried, the police announced that race was not a motive in the crime. When reporters asked how they could know this when they didn't have any suspects, they replied: "That's just what we're saying."On the morning of Kwementyaye's death, local artist Matty Day saw something horrific. He was walking his dogs by the Todd river a wide, dry, sandy bed that runs through the centre of town on which, for generations, indigenous people have camped out on when a white 4WD Toyota Hilux drove at high speed at a group of Aboriginal people."I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he tells me when we meet in a coffee shop. "There was one old guy who was struggling. If he hadn't got up he would've been run over. It was like they were driving at a flock of birds like they were little animals that could be disposed of. The respect for life was just not there.""Was there a lot of space around the group?" I ask. "They were definitely aiming for them?""Yeah, there was the whole river," he says.Concerned, Matty approached the group and saw Kwementyaye, who told him the car had already tried to run over a couple of elderly people further down the river. Review: Sports Champions

  • Oct 04, 2010 from gamrFeed(gamrFeed by VGChartz) in Gaming
gamrFeed Sports Champions is a Move-required game that includes, with the exclusion of sword dueling, an assortment of recreational activities. It is a game designed with the family in mind. It offers six unique games that widely vary from one another: Volleyball, Gladiator Duel, Bocce, Disc Golf, Archery, and Table Tennis. Other than a couple of slow-paced, yet relaxing games, Sports Champions requires a lot of physical interactions, so I strongly advise taking a break whenever arm fatigue kicks in. That can be hard to do, since the game can become addictive fun once you get going, so grab your friends, family or significant other and enjoy one of the most realistic sports experiences ever!
Each sport can be played in a single campaign mode that consists of three Cups each: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Bronze Cup includes tutorials that teach the basic controls as you play along. You face off against 10 players in each Cup, with a challenge mode set up as an intermission. You earn stars after each victory, with 3 stars being the most. Loading times between turns or serves are excellent. However, they become significantly longer during a match point. This is an extreme mood killer, especially if the game deuces, because not only does it extend the match, it also forces players to endure multiple match point load times. I didnt find calibration to be the nuisance I expected it to be. Its a harmless, quick process that measures the depth and height of the player. The Move needs to be calibrated before every game. Recalibration is unnecessary as long as you proceed with the same single player mode, or dont switch to a different sport while playing with others. You always have the option to recalibrate the Move controller at any time during the game though, just in case it seems off. Now, without further delay, let me introduce the sports!Bocce:Bocce consists of a target ball, called the pallino, and bocce (throwing) balls. You start by throwing the pallino, then each player gets a point for every bocce that is thrown closest to the pallino. The player with the most points wins. There is a meter that indicates the ideal amount of force that should be applied to underhand throws. Motioning your hand without releasing the trigger button will give you a feel for how the meter works. To throw the balls, simply release the trigger to release the ball. You can also roll the balls against smooth surfaces (similar to bowling, in a way). The Move controller nicely translates how gently or forcibly you throw the ball in the game. Rotating your wrist at the end of a throw will make the ball spin in the direction of the twist after landing. Flicking your wrist upwards spins the ball in a way that allows it to halt as it lands. This can be a lot harder than it sounds, and even though successfully pulling these moves off can prove difficult, its half the fun. After the first couple of matches, I was under the impression that Bocce was always played on smooth surfaces with wooden boarders. However, youll start to find yourself playing in urban parks and wooden docks, with or without clear boundaries, on sloped grounds, negotiating elevated objects and holes, and countless other interferences, all of which greatly affects how and where the balls land. You can interrupt the location of the opponent's balls and/or the pallino to turn the tides in your favor. Other controls include shimmying the character left or right and rotating them. You can skip opponent throws in both Bocce and Disc Golf, which helps to somewhat speed up the process of the game, since the AI can really drag out. Bocce isnt a game you want to introduce to company because it can definitely kill the party. This game is best played in single player mode, when you have an hour or two to kill. And while its a pleasant surprise, it can get boring.
Gladiator Duel: Gladiator Duel is a head-to-head battle that can be played with one or two motion controllers. Players face off in an arena and the aim is to deplete the opponents health bar, or knock them out the ring. This game truly shows off what the Move can do because it works in almost full 1:1. Players automatically move towards each other, which keeps you within striking distance. Each player is equipped with a shield that can be used with a second Move controller, or by holding the trigger button with one motion controller. Theres not a single type of attack that you cant pull off: horizontal and vertical slices, leg sweeping, air launching, mid-air attacks, thrusting, head-bashing and even face kicking downed opponents. Quick, successful combos will sometimes stun the opponent, leaving them open for a launch attack. You can regain balance by leveling and rotating your arms. The harder you swing the Move controller, the more damage youll inflict. Each player has a Super Strike gauge that gradually fills up as you successfully block and parry attacks....

    Exercises Arms More Than Legs

It's easy to put together and works smoothly. The rower itself is decent, but depends on what you plan to use it for. If you are a beginning rower or plan to use it competitively or even to warm up before going out on the water, I would not recommend this product. Rowing is a leg sport and all the high end machines I've used are built with this in mind. This Stamina Air Rower however, had an issue with this concept; the resistance on the band didn't kick in until I was into the last part of my stroke (the arms). The basic pattern of a stroke is legs, back, arms. Your legs are supposed to do the hardest work because they fatigue the least, but because of where the highest amount of resistance kicked in, my arms did the bulk of the work and I tired out way too quick. If you buy it for general exercise or for therapeutic reasons, it's probably ok. Alternatively, if you are a regular rower and have been in shells this is not a device for you, not even for warming up -... 3/5 Urban Hermit (California) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I used this rowing machine every day for about 3 years and it's still in excellent condition. I'm passing it on to a friend, since I now use other forms of exercise. I lost a lot of weight with this machine, so I highly recommend it. It gives a terrific, total body workout...tones all the muscles, gives good cardio exercise, and offers plenty of resistance. It's easy to use and offers low impact workouts. There's no variety, but rowing itself is an excellent form of exercise, and can be alternated with other types of workouts. 5/5 J. I was a little upset that there weren't any video reviews for this product, (youtube, from the company itself etc.) so I promised myself that I'd make a video demonstration for others to judge. The basic stuff you need to know: There are 12 levels of resistance (I was using resistance level 8).The computer tells you how many complete rows you have performed, time performed, calories burned or you can scan through all three (My computer didn't work when it first arrived, but after a solid punch it woke up and started working). The resistance is nice. You'll get a good workout with this inexpensive machine. Storage is convenient, but don't be fooled, 35 pounds is heavy to move around from room to room. Keep the machine close to where you plan on using it. Finally, the footstraps were a major complaint. My complaint about the footstraps is that it doesn't hold your feet securely against the footrests. Great Rower For The Money

I have had this rower for a week now and it has been working great. The first rower I bought (a different brand of rower) broke down after 15 min of use, but the Stamina Body Glider is well built and very easy to use. The instruction booklet is very clear. It only took a few minutes to put the machine together. The amount of resistance is adjustable and the machine is very quiet. The only noise you hear is from the shock absorber type device which provides the resistance. It looks and feels like a more expensive piece of equipment, but provides the same type of workout that those higher priced models provide. Relatively lightweight, the Stamina Body Glider comes in at around 35lbs. The light weight makes it easy to move the machine around. I am thoroughly satisfied with this machine so far and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a rower. 5/5 R. Rose - See all my reviews, April 17, 2006

Not meant to actually be used

I loved this rower at first, although if you have small feet, it's difficult to keep them from pulling out of the pedals while rowing. 6 broken straps, several emails to Lifespan (they did replace them for me), a change to a different type of shoe, and that problem was finally fixed. Then the pulleys started to break. Ordered a new set and replaced those (those I had to buy). Now the flywheel will not recoil. Took it apart...I would have to replace the magnetic wheel assembly. It's time to give up, it just wasn't made to be used. I used this rower for 2 1/2 years. My last rower was a cheap old piston type, it lasted 12 years. I finally broke the frame. I used the rower 4 times a week, this one just couldn't hold up. And, no, I'm not some 350 pound body builder...I barely make it over 5 feet and am under 135 pounds. I don't think I should be killing rowing machines. 1/5 T. J. Stewart (Burnsville, MN, US) - See all my reviews, March 5, 2010

    Good rower, not the best

I bought my LifeSpan rower about a year ago and have used it a lot with no major problems. It does the job and seems to be a good value for the money, but it definately is not a performance rower.PROS:CheapCompactFolds EasilySimple Digital Display lasts a very long time one one batteryCONS:No chain, the pull mechanism is a strap of fabric.Plastic wheels support the seat and pull movement. Mine have note worn out yet but they're not that smooth and they do feel as if they have worn down significantly during the year that I have used my rower. The pull movement creates no momentum as with a fan or water resisting model, so you really cant build up much inertia and each pull feels like you're starting from a stp, which is not mych like real rowing. All in all it's a good unit but if you're looking for something that will really take a beating and last a long time and also emulate the feel of rowing much better,... 3/5 James D. Great Product; be careful with shipping!

We ordered this product to help in a revamping of our exercise program, and it is absolutely great in that mission. The device assembles very easily and quickly; 15 minutes or less if you lay the parts out. There are two major assemblies, and you just attach the seat and put the two pieces together. In action, the device is smooth and quiet, and it can give you a very good workout in a relatively short period of time. The electronics package is good; the only issue some may have is that changing rowing resistance doesn't appear to change the calorie count. The only problem we had was with Amazon in shipping. This is shipped in two boxes but for some reason Amazon seems to lose sight of that fact on its own tracking. If the two boxes become separated (which ours did) and only one is delivered, they show status as "delivered".
