On the Streets of China, Electric Bikes Are Swarming
By
Austin Ramzy / Beijing

Of all the things that have changed in China over the past 30
years,
transportation has undergone one of the most obvious of transformations.
Where city streets once swarmed with bicycles, they are now full of
automobiles. Cars clog intersection and expressways. Their exhaust
clouds the sky and the air is full of the sound of horns. But zipping
through the congestion is the vanguard of another transportation
revolution: vehicles that use no gas, emit no exhaust and are so quiet
they can surprise the unwary pedestrian.
In China, electric bicycles are leaving cars in the dust. Last
year, Chinese bought 21 million e-bikes, compared with 9.4 million
autos. While China now has about 25 million cars on the road, it has
four times as many e-bikes. Thanks to government encouragement and a
population well versed in riding two wheels to work, the country has
become the world's leading market for the cheap, green vehicles, helping
to offset some of the harmful effects of the country's automobile boom.
Indeed, as engineers around the world scramble to create eco-friendly,
plug-in electric cars, China is already ahead of the game. Says Frank
Jamerson, a former GM engineer turned electric-vehicle analyst: "What's
happening in China is sort of a clue to what the future will be." (See the top 10 green stories of 2008.)
Right now the future buzzes along at a sedate pace. Government
regulations limit the top speed of e-bikes to about 12 mph. But
manufacturers are building bigger and bigger machines with speed
regulators that are easily removed. E-bikes that are basically
pedal-powered machines with an electric boost are common in cities like
Beijing and Shanghai, but e-scooters with heavier motors and top speeds
of around 30 mph, fast enough to rival mopeds, are growing in
popularity.
The e-bike boom owes much to Chinese policy. The government made
developing e-bikes an official technology goal in 1991. Major Chinese
cities have extensive bicycle lanes, which means riders can avoid the
worst of rush-hour congestion. In cities such as Shanghai, local
governments have drastically raised licensing fees on gas-powered
scooters in recent years, effectively driving hoards of consumers to
e-bike manufacturers.
The relative simplicity of the machines and their components has
encouraged a huge number of e-bike companies to open in China. In 2006
there were 2,700 licensed manufacturers, and countless additional
smaller shops. Rising to the top of the heap is not easy. Leading
manufacturer Xinri (the name means "new day") was founded in 1999 by
Zhang Chongshun, an auto parts factory executive who recognized the
potential of the field. In its first year Xinri built less than 1,000
bikes; last year it churned out 1.6 million. (See pictures of bicycles.)
Xinri's Zhang puts in thousands of miles on the road a year,
visiting as many as six cities a day to investigate local market
conditions. But ultimately what makes Xinri successful is that electric
bikes have hit a sweet spot in the Chinese economy. As Chinese grow
richer, they want more convenient means of transportation. But not
everyone can afford a car. "Motorcycles are too dangerous, cars are too
expensive, public transportation is too crowded and pedal bikes leave
you too tired," says Hu Guang, Xinri's deputy general manager. "So
people buy e-bikes."
The company's ads show Jackie Chan riding an e-bike alongside a
model in a glamorous European capital. Reality is much more mundane.
E-bikes are commonly used by migrant laborers who schlep across town
from their quarters in the suburbs to work sites across town, with their
drills and saws strapped to their bike racks. Police stations are often
fronted by a row of blue and white patrol e-bikes. Delivery workers
from McDonald's and KFC haul plastic cases stuffed with Big Macs and
fried chicken to office parks. "At first, I picked an e-bike because I
couldn't stand the sickening smell of gas from my scooter," says Zhang
Dengming, 50, a construction supervisor in Shanghai. "But after a while,
I realized that e-bikes are actually much safer than motorcycles, and
better for the environment. Although e-bikes are generally slower than
gas scooters, I find them fast enough for my daily commutes. Their
price, which is typically just over 2,000 renminbi ($290) is also more
acceptable, so I don't feel as bad when they get stolen."
Last year Chinese bought about 90% of the 23...

Stamina Fold-to-Fit Folding Equipment Mat (84-Inch by 36-Inch)
Sports (Stamina)
List Price: $50.00
Versatile, high quality mat
My wife uses and elliptical machine religiously. We just moved into a different home that happens to have brand new carpet. We naturally wanted an exercise equipment mat to protect the flooring. The placement of the equipment, however, is in a corner where too long of a mat would have extended into a traffic area. After looking at all the mats on Amazon, it was obvious that the standard length is 70+" (72 mostly) whereas we needed just 60-65".We ordered this mat and placed it under the machine. It is 84 inches long segmented into 12" folding sections. The material is very high quality and it does not mark or stain the carpet. With the folds, this mat fit perfectly under our unit. It should be noted that the elliptical has front and rear feet with a raised portion in between. The folded section fits underneath this raised portion. If you have a flat or wobbly piece of equipment, you may not want to fold the mat as the folded section is obviously a tad higher than the... 5/5 ADR Prime (Richmond, VA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Finally, a wide enough mat. Wide enough for a man. Actually, a smallish sweaty man. Sweating on the carpet is not cool. Working out partially on a mat and partially on tile/wood just plain sux.Mostly though, I want a mat large enough to catch all that drippage so I can hose the thing off every now and then and make things clean again. This mat is large enough that I can have both hands and both feet on it during push-ups. Those little yoga roll ups and stuff aren't sufficient. Also, my recumbent stationary bike fits completely over it. Once again, no sweat on the carpet. This mat does fold up for storage/haulage and isn't very heavy. The material isn't nearly as robust as the stuff my treadmill mat is made from. On the other hand, that mat isn't going anywhere because it's too heavy and doesn't roll up well or easily. This mat, however, is just about perfect for plopping on the carpet and getting some exercise. 5/5 Tyler Forge "realist" (Sunnydale, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Stamina earns its 5 stars for providing value (good function on a relatively low price) and convenience as it can fold in a 3 ft. by 1 ft. bundle for quick and easy storage when needed if one must exercise in a room whose primary function may be something other than a home gym. I purchased mine for my treadmill and I am very happy with my purchase, so far.Briefly, here are the more important facts worth knowing:- 3 ft. wide by 7 ft. long. Great deal, hard to put together
I really loved that this item was both a bike and an elliptical machine, at such an awesome price. I wasn't very certain that it would be sturdy, etc because it is so inexpensive. But I am pleasantly surprised. However, the only reason that I am rating this four stars is that it took me three hours to put together. The directions are extremely hard to follow. 4/5 M. Williams (Lompoc, CA United States) - See all my reviews, October 8, 2006Good enough...
The elliptical is great, and I enjoy using it. It is definitely not as sturdy as more expensive ones, but you get what you pay for. It still works great. The computer stopped working a week and a half after I received it though... it's not the most important part, and I just use another clock in the room to monitor time; however, that was annoying. 3/5 M. Seeley (Dover, DE) - See all my reviews, October 31, 2006Warning about this machine
The machine is tilted forward at an uncomfortable position. Other reviewers said you could fix this by putting a piece of wood under the front leg, but I did this and the metal under the back leg cracked.I've had this machine for about a year and I've only used it about 40 times. I ordered the elliptical machine, but instead the company sent me the 2 in 1 elliptical machine and bike. By the time I realized this I'd started putting it together and I decided I liked the 2 in 1 even though it was not what I ordered so it didn't seem worth the hassle of contacting the company. The biggest problem with this machine is that it tilts forward to an unacceptable level. It's like you are riding a bike standing up and tilted 45 degrees forward rather than the horizontal motion you would expect from a true elliptical machine. But this is because it is essentially pedals attached to a bike, unlike the more complex machinery in a elliptical machine at the gym, but that's... 2/5 M. Stamina SpaceMate Folding Stepper
Sports (Stamina)
List Price: $220.00
it's okay for the cost
every stair stepper you look for nowadays is really big and insanely expensive. I had one for years that folded up like this one, but one of the hydraulics was going out, so we figured we'd need to find a replacement. This does the job well for the price paid; it's nice to be able to stash this out of the way so you don't have exercise equipment dominating a room in your house. 4/5 Janet L. Kuypers - See all my reviews, May 13, 2007easy set-up, sturdy little stepper
I think this is a good little stepper for the money. We wanted something more substantial than those "handle-less" mini-steppers BUT with the convenience of being small and foldable. This seemed to be the perfect solution. I was able to set it up in 15 minutes by myself, though don't count on folding this up and storing it under a bed...it's still somewhat heavy and a bit bulky (you'd need a tall bed!) So far it seems to work well. The shock/piston adjustment on one side sticks a bit (making it difficult to adjust) but I just have to give it some jiggles. It also tends to rock from side to side when you step, but I'm hoping that will be eliminated when I have a rubber mat under it (it is on carpet.) 4/5 D. Owens - See all my reviews, September 22, 2007Broke after 5 uses!
I got this with the expectation of only having a year or so before it broke. I wish. Try only 5 uses before it's done (at least I think).Just FYI, I'm only 5'11 and 175 lbs so it's not like I'm stressing the unit. Plus, I never got to the point where I was working it that hard. The first 2 or 3 uses were okay. Even when operational, the stepping action is not very smooth. Then comes the jolt. The shocks get very hot and lose tension suddenly. You are riding along and suddenly your foot drops to the floor. It actually hurt my knee with the jolt.It usually lasts about 15 mins before you can't get the tension back at all. But, at least for a few uses, you could "pump" the stepper a little and get it to work. Now, after 5 or 6 uses, the tension is completely gone in the right leg. It's completely useless. Seriously, why can't I rate this zero stars? Just got my rowing machine in this week. Super fast delivery! The instruction sheet is not real easy to read but once you get started it goes together pretty easy. The other reviewers who said that it needs to be broken in are correct. It's a little tight at first but does loosen up. It's fairly sturdy and what I expected for the price. I'm happy with it so far. No issues to bring up. I'm 5.5 and it fits me perfectly. My husband is 6.1 and he fits although his legs don't extend out fully. His knees are slightly bent, but that should not be an issue. The only thing to mention is that the electronic console comes off real easy. It doesn't lock on the way that you would expect or if it does I haven't figured out how to do it yet. We have never owned a rowing machine before but used one in the gym. The price on this one makes it an easy choice for us. 4/5 Beldarann - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) My husband is 6.1 and he fits although his legs don't extend out fully. List Price: $900.00
Fantastic Piece of Equipment
This is a great piece of equipment. If you are wondering if quality is compromised as a result of the 2-for-1 deal, you'll be very happy to know that it isn't. This is a smooth and quiet piece of equipment. I am very impressed with it. It is of very nice quality. It took me about an hour to put together because I was being very attentive to the directions and taking my time. At first sight, the instructions are slightly confusing but it only takes a few minutes of looking over everything to understand them. The monitor is of nice quality and has several different modes: time, speed, calorie, pulse, RPM and distance. It's actually built into the bike/rower with this model as opposed to being on top like a very similar model that currently goes for $100 less. To me, it looks better built in as it is with this model. Now that I've said that, what I specifically like about this bike/rower is that is really more like a 3-in-1 machine. You not only get the... 5/5 Tams - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I bought this because it was both a recumbent bike and a rower. I am very happy with this product because the quality is the best I have had with any fitness equipment I own. It is so quiet and sturdy and easy to use. I can go from bike to rower in seconds, making it easy to rotate every couple of miles if desired. The extra bonus is that you can use it for strength training by just pulling the resistant bar while standing. And a few other options are shown in the book that comes with it.I would recommend this product for the quality and ease of use. Easy to fold up if needed. 5/5 B. I ordered the Stamina Deluxe Conversion II, knowing that it would be an excellent addition to my home gym. After assembling it, I saw that the tension knob and the spring pin knob were cracked, making it impossible to use w/o taping it together (which I did, just to see how the unit worked). I liked the unit, but it was ridiculous to pay that much for something in order to "tape it together" so I contacted Stamina and they would not return my calls or e-mails. Amazon (from whom I had purchased it) graciously replaced it with a new one. When the new one arrived, I examined it thoroughly before the delivery person left. After assembling it, I started to work out and there was such a loud squeaking noise, it was impossible to use. I persevered, thinking that there was something that "needed to be worked out" but it got worse. Once again, Stamina would not return e-mails or voicemails, so Amazon (thank goodness I had bought it from them) allowed me to return it (their policy is to... 1/5 Ki "Ki" (NJ) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: The Knee Owner's Manual
Book (Hunter House)
List Price: $19.95
A very useful companion to a total knee replacement
Total Knee Replacement & Rehabilitation is written by a surgeon (Daniel Brugioni) and a physiotherapist (Jeff Falkel), both well-qualified and specialists in this topic. Dr Falkel's own bilateral knee replacement - both knees at the same time - was an eye-opener to him and changed his own approach to managing knee replacement patients. The number of people having total knee replacement is due to massively increase as post-war baby boomers start to hit their sixties, but this is unfortunately occurring at a time when health insurance companies around the world are tightening up on cost containment. The authors recognise that rehabilitation after total knee replacement is long, and insurance companies already do not fund adequate physiotherapy time. This book was written to support the knee replacement patient with practical advice for a full year after surgery. The first two chapters give an overview of arthritis and current approaches to slowing its progression... 4/5 Shimmy Books "Shimmy" (UK) - See all my reviews This review is from: Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: The Knee Owner's Manual (Paperback) Total Knee Replacement & Rehabilitation is written by a surgeon (Daniel Brugioni) and a physiotherapist (Jeff Falkel), both well-qualified and specialists in this topic. This is an excellent book for anyone thinking of having TKR. I would suggest that you read it prior having your surgery and keep it next to you during rehab. The information contained in this book answered many of the questions my husband has had. He refers to it on a daily basis for exercises and scar management. Now he is 9 weeks post surgical and he walks with no pain, no canes or braces and he is 83. The exercises in this book have been much more advanced than he received in Physical Therapy. It is great having a P. Therapist who has been through the surgery write about his experience. 5/5 L Caine (Utah) - See all my reviews This review is from: Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: The Knee Owner's Manual (Paperback) This is an excellent book for anyone thinking of having TKR. My wife had total knee replacement surgery on one leg last June. When a friend and co-worker who had had both knees done (at the same time!) visited her in the hospital, she raved about this book and said it had helped her recovery greatly... even offered to give my wife her copy! Since the friend was doing so well only 6 weeks after her operation, I was very impressed and immediately ordered it. My wife, who is a registered nurse, has found it full of useful information and helpful exercises. Although she knew a lot about the process of knee replacement, she felt that this book clearly explains the process for the lay person. The authors stress the importance of strengthening your leg muscles before surgery. The post surgery exercises are intended to guide you through your first year of post-op healing. Lots of clear photos take the mystery out of this medical miracle and help you take charge of your own rehabilitation. If you are considering knee replacement, this book will... 5/5 gary P. Stamina Conversion II Recumbent Bike / Rower
Sports (Stamina)
List Price: $699.99
Good Item. Poor company.
To open this review I would like to explain the service and process I needed to go thru to get the equipment up and running, Then a product review.I purchaced this in the middle of march and it was delivered 4 days late in a box that looked very torn up. It was only being held together by the plastic bands, the box had been torn apart at both ends. Because I received it late I did not have time to assemble it for a week. When I began to assemble I noticed that I was missing screws, bolts, and the 'included' tools. So I went online to ask about this. On the Stamina website a form is provided for serial number to be included with any request. I went over every part included and every page of the manual and could not come up with a number. I found a place in the manual that told me where to look for the sticker with the number, but I did not have any such sticker. I sent the request anyway with my explination. After 2 weeks I had no response so I called their support number... 3/5 David J. Mcdowell (Spartanburg, SC United States) - See all my reviews, June 9, 2007Two Great Machines for One Great Price!
Don't hesitate to buy this bike/rower! It's an awesome product -- or should I say "two products in one." I couldn't find any reviews on this machine and am happy to be able to provide one to interested parties. Of course we wanted to see this product in person before we spent the money on it, and that took awhile where we live. We're glad we persevered. It was relatively easy to put together. The seat is very ergonomically positioned. As a bike it is easy to adjust not only where the seat is, but also the tension level on the biking. Biking is smooth and quiet. The knob to change from bike to rower is under the seat and therefore a little awkward to reach, but it couldn't be simpler to change the function. Just turn the knob and you've switched from rowing to biking or vice versa! The rower has the same easy adjustment on the tension and really smooth, quiet rowing action. It has several features on the electronic monitor, 'though I must confess I'm not really interested in that... 5/5 S. Webb (Kennewick, WA) - See all my reviews, December 11, 2005Better than average; I expected better computer and foot guard
I tried a few other rowing machine before this purchase. I rate this rowing machine as barely average, rowing machine alone 6 out of 10 because I like the seating and overall study structure. Rowing handle could be longer.- The computer is cheap with no programing option or upgrade from manufacturer, I give this 4 out of 10- The rowing machine foot rest was made for someone with foot size-9 and not larger. The strap does not secure properly and some what uncomfortable. In summary the foot guard for rowing machine is 2 out of 10.I like the bike and rate it 8 out of 10. The seat is comfortable, again the foot guard is poor.- The foot strap/guard could be better, I rate this as 4 out of 10.Summary: I like it, for $499 this product is average. I hope the manufacturer looks to improve and offer interchangeable parts and computer. 3/5 Andy "Engineer" (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
